Sports & Recreational Activities

If you are the active type, there are various sports that you can practice during your visit to Cyprus which are fun and will keep you in shape.

Water Sports

During the summer months, water sports’ enthusiasts have no difficulty finding the necessary equipment to practice their favourite activity, particularly in the resort towns – water-skiing, wind-surfing, paragliding, jet skiing, surfboarding, etc.

Golf

While golf is still a relatively new sport in Cyprus, there are three very good courses in the southwest of the island area and more are planned.

The golf courses are:

• Aphrodite Hills – located halfway between Lemesos and Pafos.
• Secret Valley – located 18km (11 miles) east of Pafos and 49km (30 miles) from Lemesos.
• Minthis Hills – previously known as Tsada Golf Club is located 20 minutes drive from Pafos.

Scuba Diving

Cyprus has phenomenally clear water and visibility, though a limited fish life.

There are several five star PADI schools in Cyprus, including in the capital, Lefkosia. Diving courses are available for all levels, from beginners to certification.

For advanced divers, the Zenovia wreck dive is widely regarded as one of the 10 best in the world.

Motorsports

An exciting annual spectator sporting event is the Cyprus Rally, where enthusiasts can take a close look at the world’s best rally drivers. The results of this event have a bearing on the World Rally Championship.

The event traditionally takes place in the fall, but in 2009 it was moved to the month of March.

Deep-Sea Fishing

There are day trips out of Larnaka, Ayia Napa and Protaras.

Depending on the time of the year, you might fish by trawling, drifting, long line or hook and line for: tuna, king fish, barracuda, hunter, Spanish mackerel, red snapper, white snapper, white mullet, grey mullet, mouse fish, pig fish, flat fish and more.

Hiking

Hiking is probably not the most challenging sport in Cyprus, but it can be loads of fun. The best hiking opportunities are in the Akamas Peninsula and the Troodos Mountains.

Futsal

Footbal (soccer) is the most popular sport in Cyprus and most Cypriot men love to play. Since the availability of full-size football fields is scarce, in the last ten years, the futsal scene has exploded in Cyprus. You will find a mini football field in every town, sometimes even in small villages. You will however need to book as a group.

Basketball

There are several basketball courts all over Cyprus, most of them as part of elementary and high-school grounds. Even though using the courts in schools is forbidden by non-students, people seem to use them anyway.

Tennis

Tennis has recently become extremely popular in Cyprus, following the international success of the Cypriot tennis player Marcos Baghdatis. You can now find tennis courts in many schools and again, even in small villages. It is, however, a challenge to find a free one to play on as they are usually pre-booked. To be on the safe side, you are better off booking a week in advance.
